Growing your own plants is not only money saving, it is also hugely satisfying. This practical gardening course day focuses on multiplying your plant stock through growing from seed and dividing perennials.
Growing your own plants is a very satisfying way to increase your plant stock and this course aims to show you two different ways of doing this; by sowing your own seeds and by plant division.
From seed to a garden-ready plant involves several stages and we will look at each of these from the point of sowing in pots to readiness for planting out. We will sow some seeds together and prick out some ready-grown seedling, and if you come with your own seed trays then you can take your future plants home with you.
Spring is also a great time to split many herbaceous perennials, and we will show you how to make numerous smaller plants from one parent plant, which useful way to fill empty spaces in your garden. We will look at the sort of plants which can be split, and the techniques used to split different types of herbaceous plants.
No prior gardening experience is necessary for this course. Dividing perennials can be hard work so you should be gardening fit, although it’s also fine to watch and learn. Sowing seeds can mean standing for extended periods of time so you may want to bring a folding outdoor chair if you need to take a break from being on your feet.
This course will be especially useful for those looking to create new herbaceous plants for their garden, and serves as a good adjunct to our ‘Planting a Prairie Garden’ course.
Jenny Samuels, owner of the Lindfield Gardening Company, has a wide range of experience including horticultural gardening, planting design and teaching gardening to enthusiastic beginners. Jenny’s approach to teaching gardening is influenced by a passion for greener gardening and a strong belief in working with your soil and climate rather than against it.
