Join us for a day indulging your creativity and exploring the fused glass art technique of kiln carving, to create a freestanding decorative panel, platter, or glass hanging, all inspired by the beauty of the natural world.
Join glass artist, Jazz Dixon for an opportunity to learn the technique of kiln carving to capture the beauty of the natural world in an iridescent fused glass panel.
Plan of the Day:You will be welcomed to the beautiful venue in the heart of the Downs with refreshments, before Jazz starts the day with a short introduction to glass fusing. Having drawn inspiration from the beautiful surroundings the course is held in, you will move on to working on drawing out your ideas from which you will create your design.
The kiln carving process uses a compressed fibre into which you will cut your design using a scalpel and a variety of other tools. By layering up the fibre and creating different levels, it is possible to create a 3D effect. Jazz will advise and guide you throughout the process to enable you to create your unique piece, showing you the different ways available to add texture and detail to your piece.
You will have a choice of coloured glass to use, all with an iridescent coating to give your design some shimmer. The glass is added during the firing process which will happen after the course day.
On the day you will create two pieces using the kiln carving technique. A simple hanger (20cmx5cm), and then your main piece, a 20cm square that can either be curved (free standing), shaped into a shallow platter, or flat so you can frame it.
The day will finish at 3.30pm and Jazz will take your pieces away to be fired and your finished work will be returned to you via the post in approx. 3 weeks.
As well as the opportunity to learn this stunning technique, the food and refreshments provided throughout the day will be an added highlight. The handcrafted Field Foods lunch made on sight from locally sourced sustainable ingredients are fabulous.
Jazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults. She has a reputation for patience and intimate knowledge of glass as material and a variety of techniques for crafting it.

No experience necessary, Jazz will guide and support you throughout the day.
Jazz teaches in small, informal groups (max 9).
The day is very hands-on, practical and relaxed.
The beautiful converted Field Foods Sussex barn on the edge of a rose garden in the rural village of Piddinghoe, East Sussex. The barn has fantastic views to the Downs and the home cooked food, sourced from sustainable suppliers and also grown on site, is outstanding.
