SOLD OUT – Pruning Roses – A Hands On Gardening Skills Day

February 21, 2024 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm

Rose pruning
£85.00 – £95.00

Are you unsure or confused about how to prune your roses? This one day practical course will build your confidence and skills in why and how to prune shrub, hybrid tea, and climbing roses.

This course is now SOLD OUT but you can find out about our other Hands On Gardening courses HERE, and details of all our Garden Knowledge Boost Talks are HERE

Pruning roses is a subject that many gardeners feel very unsure about – there are several different types of rose groups and each group has its own pruning regime so it’s easy to tie yourself in knots with it all. On this one-day rose pruning course you will be shown by a professional gardener the principles of rose pruning; why we prune., how much do we take off and what to do when we are unsure of what sort of roses we have. We will break down what seems like a complicated subject in to something easy to understand and you will end the day feeling confident in your new skills.

Plan of the Day After a hot drink and welcome, the day will begin by discussing the reasons that gardeners worry about pruning roses and why books and on-line guides can feel confusing and nuanced. We will then explore the principles of rose pruning; why we prune, how the plant responds to pruning and why winter is a good time to prune most roses. You will prune three different types of roses: Shrub roses, hybrid tea and climbing roses. Finally, we will discuss on-going rose care so you get the best out of your roses for the coming summer.

Subjects Covered

  • The principles of pruning – why we prune roses and how the plant responds.
  • Which roses we prune in winter.
  • Correct pruning cuts
  • How to prune a shrub rose
  • How to prune a climbing rose.
  • How to prune a hybrid tea rose
  • How to prune a rose when we don’t know what type it is.
  • Equipment to use.
  • On-going rose care; feeding, watering, deadheading and avoiding disease.

Who is the course for? There is no experience or prior knowledge necessary for this course, however students would find attending the “Winter pruning for beginners” course a very useful introduction to this course. You should be able to spend a morning outside on your feet, though you are welcome to bring a folding chair with you to sit on if this is helpful.

By the end of the day you will:

  • Understand why we prune roses.
  • Feel confident to prune a shrub or climbing rose
  • Be able to prune a rose when you are unsure of its type.
  • Know how to make correct pruning cuts using secateurs, loppers, or a pruning saw.
  • Know how to feed, water, and maintain your roses for the following year.
  • Know how to reduce the risk of common rose diseases.
