Practical Workshop: Rejuvenating Garden Borders and Planting Beds

April 2, 2027 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

£92.00

Do you have a border that is in need of a serious refresh but don’t know where to start? This one-day practical workshop will teach you how to revitalise a tired and overgrown border; and help you decide which plants to keep, which plants can be rejuvenated and provide inspiration for new plants to fill the gaps.

On this one-day practical workshop, professional gardener Jenny Samuels will show you how to breathe new life into an overgrown, gappy, or struggling border or flower bed. You’ll learn which plants to keep, which can be rejuvenated, and get inspiring ideas for new additions to bring colour and structure back to your garden.

Workshop Overview

After a warm welcome with a hot drink, we’ll begin by exploring why borders start to fail and the common mistakes that cause problems later on. Together, we’ll look at two real examples of borders that need some care and discuss the best ways to approach them.

You’ll get hands-on experience:

  • Renovating tired shrubs
  • Dividing large clumps of perennials
  • Deciding which plants to remove
  • Choosing new plants to re-energise your border for summer colour
  • We’ll break for lunch around midday (please bring a packed lunch).

Subjects Covered

  • Why borders lose their impact
  • Common planting mistakes to avoid
  • Choosing which plants stay and which should go
  • How to rejuvenate an overgrown shrub
  • Dividing oversized clumps of perennials
  • Adding new plants for structure and seasonal interest

Who is this workshop for?

No previous experience is needed — just enthusiasm and a love of gardens. You should be comfortable spending a morning outdoors on your feet, though you’re welcome to bring a folding chair if needed.

  • Feel confident tackling a tired border at home
  • Understand how to avoid common planting mistakes
  • Know how to rejuvenate an overgrown shrub
  • Be able to divide perennials successfully
  • Feel inspired and empowered to refresh your planting choices
