SUMMARY:Practical Workshop: Pruning Roses
DESCRIPTION:Pruning roses is a subject that many gardeners feel very unsure about – there are several different types of rose groups and each group has its own pruning regime so it’s easy to tie yourself in knots with it all. On this 1-day rose pruning workshop you will be shown by professional gardener Jenny Samuels\, the principles of rose pruning; why we prune\, how much we take off\, and what to do when we are unsure of what sort of roses we have. We will break down what seems like a complicated subject into something easy to understand and you will end the day feeling confident in your new skills. \nWorkshop Overview:\nThe workshop will begin by looking at the reasons why gardeners worry about pruning roses and why books and on-line guides can feel confusing and nuanced. We will then explore the principles of rose pruning; why we prune\, how the plant responds to pruning and why winter is a good time to prune most roses. You will prune a variety of roses including shrub roses and climbing roses. Finally\, we will discuss on-going rose care so you get the best out of your roses for the coming summer. I had a really enjoyable day.” Deborah \nPruning is a subject that many gardeners worry about getting right; there are so many different types of shrubs\, so many ways to prune\, and online advice can be confusing and contradictory. \nOur one-day Introduction to Pruning workshop\, led by professional gardener Jenny Samuels\, will take you through the basic principles of pruning and how to apply them to any deciduous shrub. By the end of the day\, you will have greatly increased your skills\, knowledge and confidence in pruning. \nWorkshop Overview:\nThis is a practical day\, where you will be able to practice pruning a variety of shrubs yourself. \nWe will start the day looking at the reasons that gardeners worry about pruning and why books and on-line guides can feel confusing and nuanced. Jenny will then explore the principles of pruning; why we prune\, how the plant responds to pruning\, and why winter is a good time to prune many deciduous shrubs. You will look at three different types of winter pruning; maintenance\, restoration and hard pruning and students will have a go at all three types. \nAfter covering the theory\, you will spend time practising the skills and techniques in the beautiful gardens of Danny House\, all under Jenny’s expert guidance. \nThe teaching group is kept small so that there is plenty of opportunity for everyone to be able practice the skills taught\, and also so you can ask your questions. I had a really enjoyable day.” (Deborah) \nMay is filled with bright fresh greens\, and shrubs and borders are beginning to flourish and fill out. It is the moment to make sure your plants have the right supports in place to prevent damage from summer storms\, and to employ tricks-of-the-trade to keep your garden in flower through the July dip and beyond. It’s time to prune early-flowering shrubs and evergreens and keep a sharp eye out for slugs! \nOn this 1-day practical gardening workshop\, pro gardener Jenny Samuels will develop your gardening know-how\, teaching you how to carry out seasonal jobs\, whilst also developing your plant knowledge and gardening skills. You will learn by doing\, getting to practice the techniques as they are taught because we believe hands-on is the best way to learn! \nYou will learn:\n\nHow to keep plants upright and the use of plant supports\, including the opportunity to make plant supports from coppiced hazel\nAbout the ‘Chelsea Chop’ – how\, why\, and which plants can benefit\nHow to reduce damage from slugs\, caterpillars and aphids\nHow to reduce the risk of fungal diseases\nHow to keep the garden in flower through the July dip and beyond\nPruning of early flowering shrubs\n\nWorkshop Overview:\nFrom 9.45am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on. Jenny will start with an introduction to the subjects of the day\, before heading out into the beautiful private Sussex garden for hands-on gardening. \nAll our course days are designed to be enjoyable\, informative and fun\, with a mixture of input from Jenny\, and plenty of chances to put into practice what you are learning. We keep the group small so that everyone has the chance to ask questions\, and opportunity to put into practice what you are learning because we believe the best way to learn is by doing. Full teaching notes will be provided to you as a record of the course content. \nOur set-up is ‘rustic’ so bring warm clothes and a sandwich\, soup-in-a-flask lunch\, for yourself. As hardy gardeners\, we will carry on through light rain and cold.
