This hands-on workshop takes you through the full process—from exploring seasonal dye plants and seeds\, to extraction and dyeing – as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \nAlthough we will discuss dyeing a range of fabrics\, we will especially concentrate on the material of cotton\, and other cellulose fibres. At the end of the course you will take home a pair of cotton socks that you have dyed yourself using a range of beautiful\, natural colours extracted during the workshop. Plus you’ll leave equipped with the skills\, knowledge\, and inspiration to carry on your dyeing journey—and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nEnjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. I have been raving about it to my family and friends.” Agnieszka \n\nIn mid spring the soil is warming up and there is plenty to be done in the garden to prepare your beds and plants to ensure you have a continual show of colour and interest through the rest of the spring and summer to come. \nOn our ‘Preparing Flowerbeds’ 1-day practical workshop\, professional gardener Jenny Samuels will teach you tips and techniques for ensuring your borders have the best chance of being an abundance of colour and health through the coming months\, whilst also developing your plant knowledge and gardening skills. \nYou will learn by doing\, getting to practice the techniques as they are taught. \nWorkshop Overview:\n\nHow to sow annual seeds for summer colour\nHow to plant correctly\nHow to manage different soil types\nChoosing the best mulch for your beds\nHow to make light work of weeding\nHow to divide perennials and double your plants\n\nWhat to expect on the day:\nFrom 9.45am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on. SUMMARY:Sketching Spring Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day learning to sketch and watercolour inspired by seasonal blooms. \nTake some time out to enjoy nature through sketching. Using pencils and fine-liner pens we will create expressive sketches of plants and flowers and learn techniques that you can use to engage with nature wherever you are. The course is more about the simple enjoyment of observing than having to produce a masterpiece and there is no pressure to perform. In the afternoon we will really bring the sketches to life\, adding watercolour. \nWeather permitting\, we will take advantage of the many lovely plants at Oak Barn and sketch outside. All materials will be provided except a sketchbook. Please bring a hardback sketchbook\, it should have a minimum paperweight of 160gsm for watercolours. \n\nOverview:\nMorning – pencil and fine liner drawing\nAfternoon – adding watercolour  \nSubjects covered:\n\nLooking at flower shapes and forms\nLooking at capturing the character of plants\nUsing expressive lines to make sketches full of life\nAdding bright\, colourful watercolour washes to the drawings to really bring them to life (full day only\, optional)\n\nWho is the course for?\nAnyone welcome\, beginners included! We will hopefully be sketching outside for part of the day so consider bringing a sun hat.
