DESCRIPTION:“A fabulous course for a complete beginner like me to get hands-on experience of hand\, natural dyeing” Jessica \n\nJoin dye expert Jenny Mercer for a day discovering the world of natural dyeing using autumn & winter plants we find all around us\, including barks and foraged materials. This hands-on workshop takes you through the full process—from exploring seasonal dye plants and seeds\, to extraction and dyeing – as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \nAlthough we will discuss dyeing a range of fabrics\, we will especially concentrate on the material of cotton\, and other cellulose fibres. At the end of the course you will take home a pair of cotton socks that you have dyed yourself using a range of beautiful\, natural colours extracted during the workshop. Plus you’ll leave equipped with the skills\, knowledge\, and inspiration to carry on your dyeing journey—and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nEnjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. She’ll share a brief history and walk you through the dyeing process—from plant selection to extraction techniques. \nYou’ll explore a variety of dye plants and work together to extract their natural colours. As the dye pots simmer\, you’ll prepare the cotton using mordants\, essential for bonding dye to fabric. Jenny will guide you step by step through this foundational process. \nFollowing a break for lunch\, the afternoon will be dedicated to completing the dyeing process\, dyeing a range of sample fabrics\, finishing with dyeing a pair of socks that you can take away and add to your wardrobe. \n\nSubjects Covered:\n\nA brief history of natural dyeing\nThe role and importance of mordants\nExploration of tannins\nThe differences in plants used for dyeing\nTechniques and method used in dyeing fabric\nAn overview of the use of natural dyeing in today’s world\n\n“A lovely day and Jenny was a very informative teacher. It was a great introduction to the process of natural dyeing with lots of info and ideas to take away.” April \nTutor:\nJenny Mercer trained as a textile designer 30 years ago in Scotland and has since worked as a dyer in opera\, ballet and theatre companies across the country. Jenny is passionate about sharing her skills and expertise with others\, particularly focusing on using natural dyes because they are so much better for the environment. It has been a voyage of discovery for her finding so many dyes are naturally available from plants in her local area\, on her allotment\, and in her own garden. \n\nBy the end of the day you will:\n\nhave an understanding of process of extracting natural dyes from a range of natural sources\nhave used different plants to create a number of different dyes\ndye a pair of cotton socks\, plus a range of fabric samples\, selecting colours from the palette extracted\nhave samples and records of your work to take away with you\n\nThe day includes:\nAll materials and equipment\nA pair of cotton socks that you will hand dye yourself\nUse of a craft apron and protective gloves\nTea and coffee throughout the day \n\nWho is the course for?\nNo experience necessary\, everyone is welcome. \nThe Group:\nJenny teaches in small\, informal groups.\nThe day is very hands-on\, practical and relaxed. \nThe Venue:\nThe course will be held in our very own studio which is set within the grounds of Old Barn Nurseries\, South of Horsham. SUMMARY:Practical Workshop: Preparing Flowerbeds

I have been raving about it to my family and friends.” Agnieszka \n\nIn mid spring the soil is warming up and there is plenty to be done in the garden to prepare your beds and plants to ensure you have a continual show of colour and interest through the rest of the spring and summer to come. \nOn our ‘Preparing Flowerbeds’ 1-day practical workshop\, professional gardener Jenny Samuels will teach you tips and techniques for ensuring your borders have the best chance of being an abundance of colour and health through the coming months\, whilst also developing your plant knowledge and gardening skills. \nYou will learn by doing\, getting to practice the techniques as they are taught. \nWorkshop Overview:\n\nHow to sow annual seeds for summer colour\nHow to plant correctly\nHow to manage different soil types\nChoosing the best mulch for your beds\nHow to make light work of weeding\nHow to divide perennials and double your plants\n\nWhat to expect on the day:\nFrom 9.45am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on. Jenny will start with an introduction to the subjects of the day\, before heading out into the beautiful private Sussex garden for hands-on gardening. \nAll our course days are designed to be enjoyable\, informative and fun\, with a mixture of input from Jenny\, and plenty of chances to put into practice what you are learning. We keep the group small so that everyone has the chance to ask questions\, and opportunity to put into practice what you are learning because we believe the best way to learn is by doing. Full teaching notes will be provided to you as a record of the course content. \nOur set-up is ‘rustic’ so bring warm clothes and a sandwich\, soup-in-a-flask lunch\, for yourself. As hardy gardeners\, we will carry on through light rain and cold. We have places to shelter\, but please be aware that dreadful weather may necessitate Jenny calling a halt to outdoor activities. \nWe will finish at 3pm before we clear up and leave by 3.30pm. \n\nThe Group:\nJenny teaches in small groups which ensures everyone gets the opportunity to practice\, and time to ask questions. SUMMARY:Practical Workshop: Maintaining Flowerbeds
DESCRIPTION:“I had an amazing day with Jenny. Came away feeling much more confident about what and when I should be maintaining my garden. I had a really enjoyable day.” (Deborah) \nMay is filled with bright fresh greens\, and shrubs and borders are beginning to flourish and fill out. It is the moment to make sure your plants have the right supports in place to prevent damage from summer storms\, and to employ tricks-of-the-trade to keep your garden in flower through the July dip and beyond. It’s time to prune early-flowering shrubs and evergreens and keep a sharp eye out for slugs! \nOn this 1-day practical gardening workshop\, pro gardener Jenny Samuels will develop your gardening know-how\, teaching you how to carry out seasonal jobs\, whilst also developing your plant knowledge and gardening skills. You will learn by doing\, getting to practice the techniques as they are taught because we believe hands-on is the best way to learn! \nYou will learn:\n\nHow to keep plants upright and the use of plant supports\, including the opportunity to make plant supports from coppiced hazel\nAbout the ‘Chelsea Chop’ – how\, why\, and which plants can benefit\nHow to reduce damage from slugs\, caterpillars and aphids\nHow to reduce the risk of fungal diseases\nHow to keep the garden in flower through the July dip and beyond\nPruning of early flowering shrubs\n\nWorkshop Overview:\nFrom 9.45am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on. Jenny will start with an introduction to the subjects of the day\, before heading out into the beautiful private Sussex garden for hands-on gardening. \nAll our course days are designed to be enjoyable\, informative and fun\, with a mixture of input from Jenny\, and plenty of chances to put into practice what you are learning. We keep the group small so that everyone has the chance to ask questions\, and opportunity to put into practice what you are learning because we believe the best way to learn is by doing. Full teaching notes will be provided to you as a record of the course content. \nOur set-up is ‘rustic’ so bring warm clothes and a sandwich\, soup-in-a-flask lunch\, for yourself. As hardy gardeners\, we will carry on through light rain and cold. We have places to shelter\, but please be aware that dreadful weather may necessitate Jenny calling a halt to outdoor activities. \nWe will finish at 3pm before we clear up and leave by 3.30pm. \nThe Group:\nJenny teaches in small groups which ensures everyone gets the opportunity to practice\, and time to ask questions. Whether you’re new to weaving or looking to explore your artistic side\, this workshop is the perfect way to unwind and create something special. \n“I enjoyed this course so much – it was incredibly relaxing and meditative. Also\, Theresa was such a joyous person\, I loved her!!” Louisa \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Theresa starts the course with a brief talk and introduction to weaving and the range of materials available to use during the day. Theresa will explore with you different ideas for your piece and various weaving techniques for you to use in creating your unique design. A whole range of material will be available for you to use and experiment with throughout the day. \nTheresa\, will demonstrate the basic weaving techniques and how to enhance your design with woven embroidery\, and she will support you as you use a loom frame to create your design. By the end of the day your finished woven piece will be ready to take home and hang on your wall. \n\nTutor:\nTheresa has a BA in Creative Arts and History of Art from the University of Haifa and the Mc Gill University in Montreal. She has a depth of the value of colour as a certified colour therapist\, and also teaches the art of weaving and of colour in schools\, retreats and international workshops.
