SUMMARY:A Beginners Day of Natural Dyeing - Autumn Cotton
DESCRIPTION:“A fabulous course for a complete beginner like me to get hands-on experience of hand\, natural dyeing” Jessica \n\nJoin dye expert Jenny Mercer for a day discovering the world of natural dyeing using autumn & winter plants we find all around us\, including barks and foraged materials. This hands-on workshop takes you through the full process—from exploring seasonal dye plants and seeds\, to extraction and dyeing – as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \nAlthough we will discuss dyeing a range of fabrics\, we will especially concentrate on the material of cotton\, and other cellulose fibres. At the end of the course you will take home a pair of cotton socks that you have dyed yourself using a range of beautiful\, natural colours extracted during the workshop. Plus you’ll leave equipped with the skills\, knowledge\, and inspiration to carry on your dyeing journey—and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nEnjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. She’ll share a brief history and walk you through the dyeing process—from plant selection to extraction techniques. \nYou’ll explore a variety of dye plants and work together to extract their natural colours. As the dye pots simmer\, you’ll prepare the cotton using mordants\, essential for bonding dye to fabric. Jenny will guide you step by step through this foundational process. \nFollowing a break for lunch\, the afternoon will be dedicated to completing the dyeing process\, dyeing a range of sample fabrics\, finishing with dyeing a pair of socks that you can take away and add to your wardrobe. \n\nSubjects Covered:\n\nA brief history of natural dyeing\nThe role and importance of mordants\nExploration of tannins\nThe differences in plants used for dyeing\nTechniques and method used in dyeing fabric\nAn overview of the use of natural dyeing in today’s world\n\n“A lovely day and Jenny was a very informative teacher. It was a great introduction to the process of natural dyeing with lots of info and ideas to take away.” April \nTutor:\nJenny Mercer trained as a textile designer 30 years ago in Scotland and has since worked as a dyer in opera\, ballet and theatre companies across the country. Jenny is passionate about sharing her skills and expertise with others\, particularly focusing on using natural dyes because they are so much better for the environment. It has been a voyage of discovery for her finding so many dyes are naturally available from plants in her local area\, on her allotment\, and in her own garden. \n\nBy the end of the day you will:\n\nhave an understanding of process of extracting natural dyes from a range of natural sources\nhave used different plants to create a number of different dyes\ndye a pair of cotton socks\, plus a range of fabric samples\, selecting colours from the palette extracted\nhave samples and records of your work to take away with you\n\nThe day includes:\nAll materials and equipment\nA pair of cotton socks that you will hand dye yourself\nUse of a craft apron and protective gloves\nTea and coffee throughout the day \n\nWho is the course for?\nNo experience necessary\, everyone is welcome. \nThe Group:\nJenny teaches in small\, informal groups.\nThe day is very hands-on\, practical and relaxed. \nThe Venue:\nThe course will be held in our very own studio which is set within the grounds of Old Barn Nurseries\, South of Horsham. Our studio is a light\, airy and spacious\, and just a couple of minutes walk from the Nursery’s cafe where you can purchase and enjoy your lunch during the break in the middle of the day.
