I had a really enjoyable day.” (Deborah) \nMay is filled with bright fresh greens\, and shrubs and borders are beginning to flourish and fill out. It is the moment to make sure your plants have the right supports in place to prevent damage from summer storms\, for seeds planted earlier in the season to be pinched out and potted on to create strong plants ready for pots and borders\, and for early flowering shrubs and evergreens to be pruned. \nOn this 1-day practical gardening course\, pro gardener Jenny Samuels will develop your gardening know-how\, teaching you how to carry out seasonal jobs\, whilst also developing your plant knowledge and gardening skills. You will learn by doing\, getting to practice the techniques as they are taught because we believe hands-on is the best way to learn! \nYou will learn:\n\nHow to keep plants upright and the use of plant supports\, including the opportunity to make plant supports from coppiced hazel\nAbout the ‘Chelsea Chop’ – how\, why\, and which plants can benefit\nHow to reduce damage from slugs\, caterpillars and aphids\nHow to reduce the risk of fungal diseases\nHow to tie in a climber the correct way!\nHow to keep the garden in flower\nPinching out and grow on seedlings\n\nWhat to expect on the day:\nFrom 9.45am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on. Jenny will start with an introduction to the subjects of the day\, before heading out into the beautiful private Sussex garden for hands-on gardening. \nAll our course days are designed to be enjoyable\, informative and fun\, with a mixture of input from Jenny\, and plenty of chances to put into practice what you are learning. We keep the group small (maximum of 9) so that everyone has the chance to ask questions\, and opportunity to put into practice what you are learning because we believe the best way to learn is by doing. Full teaching notes will be provided to you as a record of the course content. \nOur set-up is ‘rustic’ so bring warm clothes and a sandwich\, soup-in-a-flask lunch\, for yourself. As hardy gardeners\, we will carry on through light rain and cold. We have places to shelter\, but please be aware that dreadful weather may necessitate Jenny calling a halt to outdoor activities. \nWe will finish at 3pm before we clear up and leave by 3.30pm. \nThe Venue:\nOur course takes place at a large private rural Sussex garden in East Chiltington near Plumpton\, East Sussex. The garden has established borders\, pond\, orchard\, kitchen garden and wildflower meadows and is a beautiful setting with wonderful views of The Downs\, from which to learn to garden. \nThe Group:\nJenny teaches in small groups (max 9) which ensures everyone gets the opportunity to practice\, and time to ask questions. SUMMARY:Spring Seed Sowing and Plant Division - A Hands On Gardening Skills Day
DESCRIPTION:Growing your own plants is a very satisfying way to increase your plant stock and this course aims to show you two different ways of doing this; by sowing your own seeds and by plant division. \nFrom seed to a garden-ready plant involves several stages and we will look at each of these from the point of sowing in pots to readiness for planting out. We will sow some seeds together and prick out some ready-grown seedling\, and if you come with your own seed trays then you can take your future plants home with you. \nSpring is also a great time to split many herbaceous perennials\, and we will show you how to make numerous smaller plants from one parent plant\, which useful way to fill empty spaces in your garden.  We will look at the sort of plants which can be split\, and the techniques used to split different types of herbaceous plants. \nSubjects Covered\n\nWhich seeds should I grow?\nHow to sow small\, medium\, and large seeds into pots and trays\nBreaking seed dormancy mechanisms\nSeed compost and mulches\nPricking out and potting-on seedlings\nSeedling care and planting out\nHow and when to divide perennial plants with fibrous roots\nHow to divide big clumps of perennials with dense crowns\nHow to divide perennials with solid crowns\nAfter care of your divisions\n\nWho is the course for?\nNo prior gardening experience is necessary for this course. Dividing perennials can be hard work so you should be gardening fit\, although it’s also fine to watch and learn.
