Whether you’re new to weaving or looking to explore your artistic side\, this workshop is the perfect way to unwind and create something special. \n“I enjoyed this course so much – it was incredibly relaxing and meditative. Also\, Theresa was such a joyous person\, I loved her!!” Louisa \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Theresa starts the course with a brief talk and introduction to weaving and the range of materials available to use during the day. Theresa will explore with you different ideas for your piece and various weaving techniques for you to use in creating your unique design. A whole range of material will be available for you to use and experiment with throughout the day. \nTheresa\, will demonstrate the basic weaving techniques and how to enhance your design with woven embroidery\, and she will support you as you use a loom frame to create your design. By the end of the day your finished woven piece will be ready to take home and hang on your wall. \n\nTutor:\nTheresa has a BA in Creative Arts and History of Art from the University of Haifa and the Mc Gill University in Montreal. SUMMARY:Sketching Summer Flowers - Morning or Full Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day learning to sketch and watercolour inspired by seasonal blooms. \nTake some time out to enjoy nature through sketching. Using pencils and fine-liner pens we will create expressive sketches of plants and flowers and learn techniques that you can use to engage with nature wherever you are. The course is more about the simple enjoyment of observing than having to produce a masterpiece and there is no pressure to perfom. In the afternoon (optional) we will really bring the sketches to life\, adding watercolour. \nWeather permitting\, we will take advantage of the many lovely plants at Oak Barn and sketch outside. All materials will be provided except a sketchbook. Please bring a hardback sketchbook. SUMMARY:Fused Glass Bowls and Vases- Summer Sensations
DESCRIPTION:Join expert glass artist\, Jazz Dixon and design and create your own beautiful floral glass piece\, inspired by the colours and flowers of Summer. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before spending the first part of the morning walking around the beautiful flower fields observing and drawing some of the amazing flowers. This part of the day will help develop your ideas for your own glass piece. Time will then be spent creating some simple guided sketches\, taking time to observe the shape and colours of the flowers. \nJazz will then give you a brief talk and introduction to fused glass and the range of materials available before moving on to designing your own unique statement glass piece. This can be a square platter 30cm x 30cm\, a glass bowl 30cm diameter\, or a glass vase approximately 25cm tall. Jazz will guide you through the practicalities of the design process and show you how to incorporate the ideas from your sketches. \nAfter breaking for lunch (please bring a packed lunch with you)\, you will create your design using a wide range of coloured accessory glass\, all under Jazz’s expert guidance. \nYour finished design will be taken away and fired. It will be available for collection from West Sussex or East Sussex\, or we can arrange for your piece to be posted to you in approx. 3 weeks. Under the expert guidance of Wendy Darby\, you’ll learn the delicate craft of flower pressing—discovering how to harvest\, prepare\, and preserve flowers to create beautiful\, lasting pieces. \nSpend the day surrounded by the stunning blooms of the flower farm\, selecting your own flowers to press\, and working with pre-pressed petals and leaves to craft unique cards\, gifts and more. Whether you’re a nature lover\, a creative soul\, or simply looking for a peaceful escape\, this workshop is the perfect way to unwind and be inspired. Plus\, you’ll take home your own personal flower press and a collection of pressed flowers to continue your creative journey\, as well as leaving with your finished artwork! \nTutor:\nWendy Darby\, is a qualified teacher\, designer and crafter. She has had a varied and eclectic career\, both nationally and internationally\, which she draws upon for her crafting and design inspiration. SUMMARY:Fused Glass Lanterns
DESCRIPTION:  \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with a hot drink. \nIn the morning there will be a short introduction to glass fusing and the wide range of techniques used. You will be introduced to the project and have time to think about your own creative ideas. You will be introduced to the materials used in glass fusing and the range of techniques used to create designs\, including learning a little of the basics of glass cutting. With expert guidance\, you will create your own unique design for each of your 4 panels for your glass lantern. Once you have created your designs your expert tutor will guide you to which materials and techniques would be most suitable for each detail of your design\, and you will begin to create your panels. \nAfter lunch\, you will continue to work on each of your panels\, following your designs. All the tools and safety equipment will be supplied alongside expert tuition. At the end of the day your will be given the metal lantern shell and a candle to complete your project. \nYour glass panels will be taken away and fired. They will be available for collection from West Sussex or East Sussex\, or we can arrange for them to be posted (at your own risk) to you once completed. \nTutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults. She has a reputation for patience and intimate knowledge of glass as a material and a variety of techniques for crafting it. \nSubjects Covered:\n– An explanation of the art of fusing glass\n– Understanding how to choose glass to create a beautiful glass lantern\n– An exploration of different ideas & inspiration to spark your own imagination \nBy the end of the day you will have:\nUnderstood the basic theory of glass fusing\nLearnt about the different materials and techniques used in glass fusing\nHad a go at glass cutting\, and learnt some new skills\nDesigned and completed ready for firing 4 glass panels which will create your own unique glass lantern\nUsed your design skills to create your own unique glass piece\nEnjoyed a day with an expert tutor and like-minded creative people \nThe day includes:\nExpert tuition\nAll materials and equipment needed to create your decorative pieces\nUse of a craft apron\nTea and coffee throughout the day\nAt the end of the day\, Jazz will take your creations away and fire them. They will then be sent to you within 3 weeks of the course day. \nWho is the course for?\nThe course is suitable for those who have never tried fused glass\, or for those with a small amount of experience. The focus will be on learning very basic techniques in order to complete the projects of the day\, rather than an exploration into the vast field of glass fusing. A willingness to sketch your design ideas is important as the aim of the day is for you to create your own unique design within the confines of the materials provided. \nThe Group:\nJazz teaches in small\, informal groups.\nThe day is very hands-on\, practical and relaxed. \nThe Venue:\nOur very own studio space is set within the grounds of Old Barn Nurseries\, Dial Post\, South of Horsham. Our dedicated space for crafting courses\, is a light airy and spacious studio\, and just a couple of minutes walk from the Nurseries cafe where you can purchase and enjoy your lunch during the break in the middle of the day. SUMMARY:Spring Lino Printing Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Discover the art of lino printing\, on this creative course day inspired by the beauty of Spring. \nIf you cannot attend this date then we have another date towards the end of the year – Christmas Lino Print – Friday November 6th  \nPlan of the Day:\nJoin us at the beautiful\, Pitfield Barn Cut Flower Farm to learn how to design and carve your own linocuts. Relax in beautiful surroundings and enjoy  delicious refreshments as part of the day- please bring a packed lunch to enjoy in our gardens. \nWe begin with an introduction to linocut – how to use the carving tools and basic cutting techniques. At first\, you will make your own small practice block to learn the techniques. You will be shown how to ink your lino block and burnish prints by hand. \nAfter a break for lunch and tour of the flower fields\, you will return to your creations. DESCRIPTION:Join dye expert Jenny Mercer for an inspiring day delving into the art of natural dyeing using plants found all around us. This hands-on workshop takes you through the entire process\, from exploring preferred seeds and plants\, to extraction and dyeing\, as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \n\nOur Spring Natural Dye course will focus on dyeing silk\, and will include dyeing silk ribbon samples\, inspired by the latest wedding trend\, as well as a silk cushion cover. By the end of the session\, you’ll leave with a beautiful cushion cover that you have dyed yourself using one of the colours extracted on the day\, and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou’ll be welcomed with refreshments before Jenny gives an introduction to the colourful world of natural dyeing\, including a brief history\, looking at source plants\, the process of extraction and dyeing. \nTogether you will use a variety of plants to extract their natural dyes\, which you will prepare together and the pots will boil away during the morning as you work. SUMMARY:Lino Printing - Christmas Creations Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a creative day exploring the art of linocut and lino printing\, and to learn how to design and carve your own winter inspired linocuts. Whether you’re completely new to the techniques\, or have some experience\, come and join us for a relaxing day in which you will create your own print designs to use in your Christmas craft projects. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou’ll be welcomed with refreshments before course tutor Wendy Darby\, begins with an introduction to linocut\, demonstrating how to use the carving tools and basic cutting techniques. Once you have used materials provided\, or those you might like to bring with you\, to use as inspiration for your winter themed designs\, you will make your own small practice block to learn the techniques. You will be shown how to ink your lino block and burnish prints by hand. \nAfter a break for lunch which you can either bring with you or buy from the Old Barn Cafe onsite\, you will return to your creations. Once confident with the techniques\, you will design your own A6 Block\, taking inspiration from resource materials or your own images\, before printing your block on to a range of stationery items – cards\, gift tags and more\, all ready for you to use this Christmas. \nBy the end of the workshop you will have several completed images to take home. \nSubjects Covered:\n• Introduction to linocut and the materials to use\n• How to use cutting tools and materials\n• Creating designs from nature\n• Sourcing and transferring designs\n• Managing your inks\n• Hand burnishing prints \nTutor:\nWendy Darby\, is a qualified teacher\, designer and crafter. With plenty of glass and accessories to explore\, you’ll be encouraged to experiment and create your own unique designs. \nUnder Jazz’s expert guidance\, you’ll learn how to cut glass safely\, and how to handle and use a range of accessory glass to create your own Christmas decorations. By the end of the course\, you’ll have created one large decoration and three smaller pieces. \nJazz will then take your designs for firing\, and your finished decorations will be posted to you within approximately three weeks—just in time to enjoy for Christmas! \nTutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults.
