SUMMARY:Fused Glass Poppies and Garden Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Join expert glass artist\, Jazz Dixon for a craft class with a difference. Learn to create your own beautiful glass poppies\, suitable for indoor or outdoor display. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Jazz gives a short introduction to glass fusing and the wide range of techniques used. You will be introduced to the projects and have time to think about your own creative ideas. You will have a choice of colours\, from traditional red\, or a small selection of other colours. You will be introduced to glass cutting\, and with expert guidance\, you will cut and shape your glass to create the petals for your flowers. \nFollowing a break for lunch (please bring a packed lunch with you)\, you will construct your two poppies\, with the opportunity to use accessory glass to add details to your flowers. Once you have finished your 2 flowers\, you will have the opportunity to use the off cuts of glass to create smaller floral hanger. All the tools and safety equipment will be supplied alongside expert tuition. \nYour pieces will be taken away and fired. They will be available for collection from West Sussex or East Sussex\, or can be posted to you (at your own risk) once completed. DESCRIPTION:“A fabulous course for a complete beginner like me to get hands-on experience of hand\, natural dyeing” Jessica \n\nJoin dye expert Jenny Mercer for a day discovering the world of natural dyeing using autumn & winter plants we find all around us\, including barks and foraged materials. This hands-on workshop takes you through the full process—from exploring seasonal dye plants and seeds\, to extraction and dyeing – as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \nAlthough we will discuss dyeing a range of fabrics\, we will especially concentrate on the material of cotton\, and other cellulose fibres. At the end of the course you will take home a pair of cotton socks that you have dyed yourself using a range of beautiful\, natural colours extracted during the workshop. Plus you’ll leave equipped with the skills\, knowledge\, and inspiration to carry on your dyeing journey—and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nEnjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. She’ll share a brief history and walk you through the dyeing process—from plant selection to extraction techniques. \nYou’ll explore a variety of dye plants and work together to extract their natural colours. As the dye pots simmer\, you’ll prepare the cotton using mordants\, essential for bonding dye to fabric. DESCRIPTION:Join our festive fused glass workshop and create your own beautiful Christmas decorations! Enjoy a fun\, creative day making unique pieces for your tree and home while getting into the Christmas spirit. \nPlan of the Day:\nWe will start with a brief talk and introduction to fused glass and the range of materials available. We will look at the different types of glass fusion and how the material can be used to create different types of designs. There will be lots of materials available and you will be encouraged to play and create your own unique designs. \nAfter our introduction you will chose the projects you wish to work on. You can choose from a Christmas tree or an s curved Christmas panel\, or a tealight holder/bowl. You will learn how to cut and break glass safely to create your design\, using a range of colours\, with the help and guidance from the expert. \nYour second project of the day will be to create up to 3 small tree decorations. SUMMARY:Lino Printing - Christmas Creations Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a creative day exploring the art of linocut and lino printing\, and to learn how to design and carve your own winter inspired linocuts. Whether you’re completely new to the techniques\, or have some experience\, come and join us for a relaxing day in which you will create your own print designs to use in your Christmas craft projects. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou’ll be welcomed with refreshments before course tutor Wendy Darby\, begins with an introduction to linocut\, demonstrating how to use the carving tools and basic cutting techniques. Once you have used materials provided\, or those you might like to bring with you\, to use as inspiration for your winter themed designs\, you will make your own small practice block to learn the techniques. You will be shown how to ink your lino block and burnish prints by hand. \nAfter a break for lunch which you can either bring with you or buy from the Old Barn Café onsite\, you will return to your creations. Once confident with the techniques\, you will design your own A6 Block\, taking inspiration from resource materials or your own images\, before printing your block on to a range of stationery items – cards\, gift tags and more\, all ready for you to use this Christmas. \nBy the end of the workshop you will have several completed images to take home. \nSubjects Covered:\n• Introduction to linocut and the materials to use\n• How to use cutting tools and materials\n• Creating designs from nature\n• Sourcing and transferring designs\n• Managing your inks\n• Hand burnishing prints \nTutor:\nWendy Darby\, is a qualified teacher\, designer and crafter. SUMMARY:Christmas Sparkle in Fused Glass Christmas Decorations
DESCRIPTION:Join our festive fused glass workshop and create your own beautiful Christmas decorations! Enjoy a fun\, creative day making unique pieces for your tree and home while getting into the Christmas spirit. \nPlan of the Day:\nWe will start with a brief talk and introduction to fused glass and the range of materials available. We will look at the different types of glass fusion and how the material can be used to create different types of designs. There will be lots of materials available and you will be encouraged to play and create your own unique designs. \nAfter our introduction you will chose the projects you wish to work on. You can choose from a Christmas tree or an s curved Christmas panel\, or a tealight holder/bowl. You will learn how to cut and break glass safely to create your design\, using a range of colours\, with the help and guidance from the expert. \nYour second project of the day will be to create up to 3 small tree decorations. You will have a choice of materials and a range of designs to inspire you as you create your own personal pieces. \nJazz will then take your designs for firing\, and your finished decorations will be posted to you within approximately three weeks—in time to enjoy in the build up to Christmas! \nTutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults. She has a reputation for patience and intimate knowledge of glass as material and a variety of techniques for crafting it. \nSubjects Covered:\nAn explanation of the art of fusing glass\nUnderstanding how to choose glass to create beautiful glass decorations\nPractice with different decorative techniques to create your piece\nAn exploration of different ideas & inspiration to spark your own imagination \nBy the end of the day you will have:\n-You will have enjoyed a fun festive workshop \n-You will have learnt about fused glass and the range of techniques used \n-You will have used some design skills to create your own unique design for your own festive decoration \n-You will have created 1 large decoration or panel ready for firing \n-You will have created up to 3 small tree decorations ready for firing \n-You will have used a range of accessory glass to create your pieces. \n-You will have learnt some basic glass cutting skills \n-You will have enjoyed the company of an expert tutor and other like minded creative people. \nThe day includes:\nAll materials and equipment required to create your decorative pieces\nUse of a craft apron\nLight refreshments throughout the day. Please bring a packed lunch.\nPostage – Jazz will send you your finished decorations after firing. SUMMARY:Sketching Spring Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day learning to sketch and watercolour inspired by seasonal blooms. \nTake some time out to enjoy nature through sketching. Using pencils and fine-liner pens we will create expressive sketches of plants and flowers and learn techniques that you can use to engage with nature wherever you are. The course is more about the simple enjoyment of observing than having to produce a masterpiece and there is no pressure to perform. In the afternoon we will really bring the sketches to life\, adding watercolour. \nWeather permitting\, we will take advantage of the many lovely plants at Oak Barn and sketch outside. All materials will be provided except a sketchbook. Please bring a hardback sketchbook\, it should have a minimum paperweight of 160gsm for watercolours. \n\nOverview:\nMorning – pencil and fine liner drawing\nAfternoon – adding watercolour  \nSubjects covered:\n\nLooking at flower shapes and forms\nLooking at capturing the character of plants\nUsing expressive lines to make sketches full of life\nAdding bright\, colourful watercolour washes to the drawings to really bring them to life (full day only\, optional)\n\nWho is the course for?\nAnyone welcome\, beginners included! We will hopefully be sketching outside for part of the day so consider bringing a sun hat. If you find standing uncomfortable\, you are welcome to continue drawing in the studio instead. \nBy the end of the session\, you will have:\n\nSpend some time switching off from daily life through sketching\nLearnt some useful techniques for making quick flower sketches\nLearnt about materials\nAnd taken a bit of time to enjoy nature\n\nThe workshop day includes:\nComplimentary refreshments on arrival\nStep-by-step guidance\nAll materials will be provided except a sketchbook. Please bring a sketchbook with a minimum paperweight of 160gsm. \n\nTutor:\nAnna Ribo is a nature journaling teacher and planting designer. For her\, drawing and planting are closely related and she uses drawing to think creatively when doing planting schemes and as a way to enjoy nature. She very much likes to share her skills\, whether teaching nature drawing and journaling or hand drawing to garden designers. DESCRIPTION:Ever been disappointed when your garden photograph just doesn’t match up to the wonderful view you saw in real life? Join professional photographer Matthew Thomas in the gorgeous gardens of Field Place Manor House and find out how to make truly great shots\, every time. \nThis early evening workshop will involve a mixture of training room teaching\, and a practical session implementing what you have learnt\, using the wonderful grounds of Field Place Manor House as your subject matter. \nSubjects Covered:\nTraining room session: Learning what makes a great shot.\nThe fundamentals of good composition\, how to work with light\, how to use any camera like a pro. \nPractical session in the gardens of Field Place\, with hands-on tuition. \nMaking the shot is only half the story: We will return to the seminar room to learn how to easily edit your photographs with skill to bring out their best – and remove the worst! \nWho is the course for?\nThe course is designed for beginners and those with some experience of using a camera\, who want to up their game and make great photographs. Whether you’re new to weaving or looking to explore your artistic side\, this workshop is the perfect way to unwind and create something special. \n“I enjoyed this course so much – it was incredibly relaxing and meditative. Also\, Theresa was such a joyous person\, I loved her!!” Louisa \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Theresa starts the course with a brief talk and introduction to weaving and the range of materials available to use during the day.
