It was such good fun & really useful.”  Chris \nThis 2-day step-by step design course\, led by multi-award winning garden designer Juliet Sargeant\, will take you through the process of designing your own small garden. \nThe course is happening across two Wednesday’s 22nd July & Monday 3rd August \nDay 1\, Wednesday 22nd July – CONCEPT & CONSTRAINTS\nSubjects covered:\nDrawing inspiration from your surroundings\nDeveloping your brief\nThe design concept\nEfficient use of space\nTreatment of boundaries\nNeighbours and the law\nManaging small level changes \nDay 2\, Monday 3rd August – DESIGN & IMPLEMENTATION\nSubjects covered:\nDrainage in a small town garden\nDetailing your design\nChoosing hard landscaping materials\nLogistics & practicalities\nThe design documents\nContracts & engaging a contractor \nBy the end of the course you will:\n– a basic labelled\, scale drawing of your own design\n– considered suitable hard landscaping materials\n– an understanding of the legal requirements & responsibilities\n– confidence to instruct & engage a contractor to build your garden\n– a scaled planting area outlined (a follow-on planting design day course  will run on Wednesday 13th May 2026) \nThe course includes:\n20% of Voucher in the Café\n20% Off Plants voucher to spend at Old Barn Nurseries\nPre-course video instructions for preparation\nAn illustrated booklet to work through\, with comprehensive notes\nStep-by-step guidance from ‘concept to contractor’\nPaper & drawing equipment \nTutor:\nJuliet Sargeant is a multi-award-winning designer\, with over 20 years of experience in designing gardens and also teaching about them. She studied garden and landscape design at the University of Brighton and has created numerous show gardens\, including the Macmillan Cancer Support Legacy Garden at RHS Malvern. \nKeri comes from a background in luxury travel and hospitality\, and her love of travel and natural landscapes continues to inspire her — resulting in gardens that are both beautiful and deeply rooted in their surroundings. \nAlongside her design work\, Keri also works as a lead designer in Juliet’s studio and shares her passion and expertise as a tutor at The Sussex Garden School.
