Also\, Theresa was such a joyous person\, I loved her!!” Louisa \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Theresa starts the course with a brief talk and introduction to weaving and the range of materials available to use during the day. Theresa will explore with you different ideas for your piece and various weaving techniques for you to use in creating your unique design. A whole range of material will be available for you to use and experiment with throughout the day. \nTheresa\, will demonstrate the basic weaving techniques and how to enhance your design with woven embroidery\, and she will support you as you use a loom frame to create your design. By the end of the day your finished woven piece will be ready to take home and hang on your wall. \n\nTutor:\nTheresa has a BA in Creative Arts and History of Art from the University of Haifa and the Mc Gill University in Montreal. She has a depth of the value of colour as a certified colour therapist\, and also teaches the art of weaving and of colour in schools\, retreats and international workshops. SUMMARY:Fused Glass Bowls and Vases- Summer Sensations
DESCRIPTION:Join expert glass artist\, Jazz Dixon and design and create your own beautiful floral glass piece\, inspired by the colours and flowers of Summer. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before spending the first part of the morning walking around the beautiful flower fields observing and drawing some of the amazing flowers. This part of the day will help develop your ideas for your own glass piece. Time will then be spent creating some simple guided sketches\, taking time to observe the shape and colours of the flowers. \nJazz will then give you a brief talk and introduction to fused glass and the range of materials available before moving on to designing your own unique statement glass piece. This can be a square platter 30cm x 30cm\, a glass bowl 30cm diameter\, or a glass vase approximately 25cm tall. Jazz will guide you through the practicalities of the design process and show you how to incorporate the ideas from your sketches. \nAfter breaking for lunch (please bring a packed lunch with you)\, you will create your design using a wide range of coloured accessory glass\, all under Jazz’s expert guidance. \nYour finished design will be taken away and fired. It will be available for collection from West Sussex or East Sussex\, or we can arrange for your piece to be posted to you in approx. 3 weeks. SUMMARY:Fused Glass Lanterns
DESCRIPTION:  \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with a hot drink. \nIn the morning there will be a short introduction to glass fusing and the wide range of techniques used. You will be introduced to the project and have time to think about your own creative ideas. You will be introduced to the materials used in glass fusing and the range of techniques used to create designs\, including learning a little of the basics of glass cutting. With expert guidance\, you will create your own unique design for each of your 4 panels for your glass lantern. Once you have created your designs your expert tutor will guide you to which materials and techniques would be most suitable for each detail of your design\, and you will begin to create your panels. \nAfter lunch\, you will continue to work on each of your panels\, following your designs. All the tools and safety equipment will be supplied alongside expert tuition. At the end of the day your will be given the metal lantern shell and a candle to complete your project. \nYour glass panels will be taken away and fired. They will be available for collection from West Sussex or East Sussex\, or we can arrange for them to be posted (at your own risk) to you once completed. \nTutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults. The focus will be on learning very basic techniques in order to complete the projects of the day\, rather than an exploration into the vast field of glass fusing. A willingness to sketch your design ideas is important as the aim of the day is for you to create your own unique design within the confines of the materials provided. \nThe Group:\nJazz teaches in small\, informal groups.\nThe day is very hands-on\, practical and relaxed. \nThe Venue:\nOur very own studio space is set within the grounds of Old Barn Nurseries\, Dial Post\, South of Horsham. Our dedicated space for crafting courses\, is a light airy and spacious studio\, and just a couple of minutes walk from the Nurseries cafe where you can purchase and enjoy your lunch during the break in the middle of the day. DESCRIPTION:Discover the art of lino printing\, on this creative course day inspired by the beauty of Spring. \nIf you cannot attend this date then we have another date towards the end of the year – Christmas Lino Print – Friday November 6th  \nPlan of the Day:\nJoin us at the beautiful\, Pitfield Barn Cut Flower Farm to learn how to design and carve your own linocuts. Relax in beautiful surroundings and enjoy  delicious refreshments as part of the day- please bring a packed lunch to enjoy in our gardens. \nWe begin with an introduction to linocut – how to use the carving tools and basic cutting techniques. At first\, you will make your own small practice block to learn the techniques. You will be shown how to ink your lino block and burnish prints by hand. \nAfter a break for lunch and tour of the flower fields\, you will return to your creations. SUMMARY:A Beginners Day of Natural Dyeing - Sumptuous Silk
DESCRIPTION:Join dye expert Jenny Mercer for an inspiring day delving into the art of natural dyeing using plants found all around us. This hands-on workshop takes you through the entire process\, from exploring preferred seeds and plants\, to extraction and dyeing\, as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \n\nOur Spring Natural Dye course will focus on dyeing silk\, and will include dyeing silk ribbon samples\, inspired by the latest wedding trend\, as well as a silk cushion cover. By the end of the session\, you’ll leave with a beautiful cushion cover that you have dyed yourself using one of the colours extracted on the day\, and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou’ll be welcomed with refreshments before Jenny gives an introduction to the colourful world of natural dyeing\, including a brief history\, looking at source plants\, the process of extraction and dyeing. \nTogether you will use a variety of plants to extract their natural dyes\, which you will prepare together and the pots will boil away during the morning as you work. With plenty of glass and accessories to explore\, you’ll be encouraged to experiment and create your own unique designs. \nUnder Jazz’s expert guidance\, you’ll learn how to cut glass safely\, and how to handle and use a range of accessory glass to create your own Christmas decorations. By the end of the course\, you’ll have created one large decoration and three smaller pieces. \nJazz will then take your designs for firing\, and your finished decorations will be posted to you within approximately three weeks—just in time to enjoy for Christmas! \nTutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults. SUMMARY:Glass Leaf Casting - 2 Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique two-day glass course for autumn\, covering both glass fusing and casting techniques\, to create your own stunning statement piece for your home. \nYou’ll have the choice to make either a large decorative bowl\, a medium bowl plus coasters\, or a beautiful window hanging—all incorporating delicate glass leaves you’ve cast yourself from real foliage. You’ll be guided step-by-step through the process by expert glass artist Jazz Dixon. \nThis course takes place across two days – Friday 3rd and Friday 10th October. \nDay 1 – 3rd October: \nThe day starts with an introduction to glass fusing and casting. After discussing the project options and having time to think about your own creative ideas\, you’ll use fresh leaves – either ones you have brought with you or ones from an array that Jazz will provide – to create highly detailed moulds. Once your moulds are set and cleaned\, you will fill these with glass powders and prepare them for firing. Jazz will take your moulds away and fire them after day 1. \nDay 2 – 10th October: \nYou’ll be reunited with your fired moulds and you will gently remove your paper-thin glass leaves. Then you’ll assemble your statement piece: a large bowl\, a medium bowl with 2 coasters\, or a window hanging. With a choice of base glass and added decorative powders\, your design will be entirely your own. Final pieces will be taken away for firing and you can then either collect your work\, or it can be posted to you. This hands-on workshop takes you through the entire process\, from exploring preferred seeds and plants\, to extraction and dyeing\, as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \nThe day will focus on dyeing silk\, and will include dyeing silk ribbon samples\, inspired by the latest wedding trend\, as well as a silk cushion cover. By the end of the session\, you’ll leave with a beautiful cushion cover that you have dyed yourself using one of the colours extracted on the day\, and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nEnjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. She’ll share a brief history and walk you through the dyeing process—from plant selection to extraction techniques. \nYou’ll explore a variety of dye plants and work together to extract their natural colors. As the dye pots simmer\, you’ll prepare your silk cushion cover using mordants\, essential for bonding dye to fabric. Jenny will guide you step by step through this foundational process. \nFollowing a break for lunch\, the afternoon will be dedicated to completing the dyeing process. SUMMARY:Fused Glass Art Poppies
DESCRIPTION:Join expert glass artist\, Jazz Dixon for a craft class with a difference. Learn to create your own beautiful glass poppies\, suitable for indoor or outdoor display. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Jazz gives a short introduction to glass fusing and the wide range of techniques used. Having talked you through the projects for the day\, you will have time to think about your own creative ideas and will have the choice of a creating your poppies in traditional red\, or a small selection of other colours. Jazz will then introduce you to glass cutting\, and with expert guidance\, you will cut and shape your glass to create the petals for your flowers. \nFollowing a break for a delicious lunch\, you will construct your two poppies\, with the opportunity to use accessory glass to add details to your flowers. Once your pieces are complete you will have the opportunity to use the off cuts of glass to create smaller flowers\, either to wear as a brooch or mounted on a piece of clear glass to create a glass hanger. \nAt the end of the day\, Jazz will take your creations away for firing and your finished pieces will be posted to you within about 3 weeks of the course day. This part of the day will help develop your ideas for your own glass piece. Time will then be spent creating some simple guided sketches\, taking time to observe the shape and colours of the flowers. \nJazz will then give you a brief talk and introduction to fused glass and the range of materials available before moving on to designing your own unique statement glass piece. This can be a square platter 30cm x 30cm\, a glass bowl 30cm diameter\, or a glass vase approximately 25cm tall. SUMMARY:Fused Glass Relief Panels - The Art of Kiln Carving
DESCRIPTION:“A thoroughly enjoyable course. Never having done anything like this before\, it was a great experience and I was so pleased with what I achieved. Thank you so much!” Linda \n\nKiln carving is an unusual but not difficult way of creating a design in glass\, and it is related to the idea of creating relief designs\, similar to wood blocks or lino cutting. Classes teaching this technique are not often available\, so our 1-day course with glass artist Jazz Dixon will be a unique opportunity to explore and create in this way.\n\nPlan of the Day:\nYou’ll be welcomed with refreshments before Jazz introduces you to the process of glass fusing and the unique technique of kiln carving. \nDrawing inspiration from a range of sources\, you’ll begin by sketching your ideas and developing a design to bring to life in glass. Using soft compressed fibre\, you’ll carve your design with a scalpel and other tools. By layering up the fibre and creating different levels\, it is possible to create a 3D effect. Jazz will guide you every step of the way\, helping you shape your ideas showing you the different ways available to add texture and detail to your piece. \nYou’ll work with a selection of coloured\, iridescent glass to add shimmer and vibrancy to your work. The glass is added during the firing process which will happen after the course day. \nOver the course of the day\, you’ll create two pieces: a main panel—either framed in a sleek metal frame or gently curved to stand on its own—and a smaller hanging suncatcher. After the workshop\, Jazz will fire your pieces in her studio kiln. Your finished work can either be collected or will be posted to you within 3 weeks of the course. \nWhether you’re a beginner or have some experience\, this is a relaxed and inspiring day to enjoy creativity\, learn new skills\, and take home something truly unique. \n“A fantastic course with great tuition. The long strips of cloth will then be ready to be woven on a frame loom. DESCRIPTION:Join expert glass artist\, Jazz Dixon for a craft class with a difference. Learn to create your own beautiful colourful glass flowers inspired by spring blooms\, that you can enjoy either inside your home or in your garden. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments and Jazz will begin the course with a short introduction to glass fusing and the wide range of techniques used. Having talked you through the projects for the day\, you will have time to think about your own creative ideas\, and select the glass you would like to use from a range of coloured glass options. Jazz will then introduce you to glass cutting and\, under her expert guidance\, you will cut and shape your glass to create petals for your flowers. \nIn the afternoon you will construct your flower designs\, with the opportunity to use accessory glass to add details to your creations. Once your 2 flowers are complete you will be able to use the glass off cuts to create smaller flowers\, either to wear as a brooch or mounted on a piece of clear glass to create a glass hanger. \nAt the end of the day\, Jazz will take your creations away for firing and your finished pieces will be posted to you within about 3 weeks of the course day. SUMMARY:Fused Glass Art Poppies - Sold Out - see Nov Fused Glass Course
DESCRIPTION:Join expert glass artist\, Jazz Dixon for a craft class with a difference. Learn to create your own beautiful glass poppies\, suitable for indoor or outdoor display. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Jazz gives a short introduction to glass fusing and the wide range of techniques used. Having talked you through the projects for the day\, you will have time to think about your own creative ideas and will have the choice of a creating your poppies in a wide range of colours from traditional red\, to blue\, purple\, white\, yellow\, orange\, or pink. Jazz will then introduce you to glass cutting\, and with expert guidance\, you will cut and shape your glass to create the petals for your flowers. \nFollowing a break for a delicious lunch\, you will construct your two poppies\, with the opportunity to use accessory glass to add details to your flowers. Once your pieces are complete you will have the opportunity to use the off cuts of glass to create smaller flowers\, either to wear as a brooch or mounted on a piece of clear glass to create a glass hanger. \nAt the end of the day\, Jazz will take your creations away for firing and your finished pieces will be posted to you within about 3 weeks of the course day\, ready for display. Your 3D poppies will be suitable for indoor or outdoor display\, and Jazz will mount each of them on a sturdy black stem before sending them to you. \nSubjects Covered:\nAn explanation of the art of fusing glass\nUnderstanding how to choose glass to create beautiful glass decorations\nAn exploration of different ideas & inspiration to spark your own imagination \nBy the end of the day you will:\nUnderstand the basic theory of glass fusing\nHad a go at glass cutting\, and learnt some new skills\nDesigned and completed ready for firing 2 glass poppies\nUsed your design skills and newly acquired glass skills to create a mini project \nTutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults. She has a reputation for patience and intimate knowledge of glass as material and a variety of techniques for crafting it. \nThe day includes:\nA tasty lunch and refreshments throughout the day\nMaterials needed to create your decorative pieces\nAll equipment required for the day\nUse of a craft apron\nJazz will fuse your piece after the class and then send them to you within approx. 3 weeks of the course day \nWho is the course for?\nNo experience necessary.\nThis day involves basic glass-cutting\, which Jazz will show you and help you with. \nThe Group:\nJazz teaches in small\, informal groups (max 9).\nThe day is very hands-on\, practical and relaxed. \nThe Venue:\nThe beautifully converted Field Foods Sussex barn is on the edge of a rose garden in the heart of the South Downs near the village of Piddinghoe\, East Sussex. SUMMARY:A Beginners Day of Natural Dyeing
DESCRIPTION:Join dye expert\, Jenny Mercer for a day discovering the world of natural dyeing using plants we find all around us. At the end of the course you will take home a scarf to add to your wardrobe\, that you have dyed yourself using one of the palette of natural colours extracted on the day. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Jenny will give you an introduction to the colourful world of natural dyeing\, including a brief history\, looking at source plants\, the process of extraction and dyeing. \nTogether you will use a variety of plants to extract their natural dyes\, which you will prepare together and the pots will boil away during the morning as you work. The dyes will be used on a scarf which you will prepare with mordants to bond the dye to the material\, with Jenny taking you through the process step by step. \nYou will break for a delicious lunch\, all homemade in the venue kitchen\, and if the weather is fine\, you can step out and enjoy the cottage garden and flower borders at the beautiful secluded venue in the heart of East Sussex. \nThe afternoon will be used to complete the process of dyeing your scarf which you will be able to enjoy long beyond the course day\, or you may like to make one to give as a gift. \nSubjects Covered:\nA brief history of dyeing\nUnderstanding the importance of mordants in the dyeing process\nThe differences in plants used for dyeing\nTechnique and method used in dyeing fabric\nAn overview of the use of natural dyeing in today’s world \nBy the end of the day you will:\nHave an understanding of process of extracting natural dyes from a range of plants\nHave used different plants to create a number of different dyes\nDyed a scarf in one plant dye\, selecting the colour from the range created\nHave samples and records of your work to take away with you \nTutor:\nJenny Mercer trained as a textile designer 30 years ago in Scotland and has since worked as a dyer in opera\, ballet and theatre companies across the country. Jenny is passionate about sharing her skills and expertise with others\, particularly focusing on using natural dyes because they are so much better for the environment. DESCRIPTION:Join expert weaver Theresa Sundt to create your own weaving of a beautiful summer scene. \nPlan of the Day\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Theresa starts the course with a brief talk and introduction to weaving and the range of materials available to use during the day. Theresa will explore with you different ideas for your piece and various weaving techniques for you to use in creating your unique design. A whole range of material will be available for you to use and experiment with throughout the day. \nTheresa\, will demonstrate the basic weaving techniques and how to enhance your design with woven embroidery\, and she will support you as you use a loom frame to create your piece. \nIn the middle of the day you will break for a delicious Field Foods handmade lunch\, before returning to finish your beautiful design\, which\, by the end of the day\, will be ready to take home and hang on your wall. \nSubjects Covered:\nAn explanation of the art of weaving\nA demonstration on how to thread a frame loom\nExploration of the different techniques to create your piece\nInspiring woven samples and pictures to spark your imagination \nBy the end of the day you will have…\n• enjoyed a fun colourful workshop\n• learned all about creating a weaving from scratch\n• a deep understanding on how to use colour in a design\n• used a variety of special yarns\n• created and finished your own woven picture to cheer up any wall! \nTutor:\nTheresa has a BA in Creative Arts and History of Art from the University of Haifa and the Mc Gill University in Montreal. She has a depth of the value of colour as a certified colour therapist\, and also teaches the art of weaving and of colour in schools\, retreats and international workshops. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a relaxing day surrounded by the beautiful flowers of Pitfield Barn Cut Flower Farm\, and learn to harvest\, prepare flowers for pressing and be inspired to create your own personalised art. \nPlan of the Day:\nThe workshop starts with a demonstration by your tutor for the day\, Wendy Darby\, of the art of flower pressing\, including how to select and prepare your flowers through the seasons. \nYou will choose a variety of fresh flowers from the farm garden to press in your personal flower press. The press and flowers will be yours to take home at the end of the day. \nYou will also work with pre-pressed flowers which we have pressed for you. Wendy will guide you through techniques for mounting and framing your pressed flowers\, to make cards and other keepsakes during the course. \nTutor:\nWendy Darby\, is a qualified teacher\, designer and crafter. She has had a varied and eclectic career\, both nationally and internationally\, which she draws upon for her crafting and design inspiration. She is also a qualified Garden Designer\, encompassing the phrase ‘inspired by the Garden’ in almost everything she undertakes.
