DESCRIPTION:Next Fused Glass Course Day on Wednesday 19th July \nFused Glass Art for Beginners – Glass Plant Reliefs\nJoin glass artist\, Jazz Dixon for a craft class with a difference.\nLearn to create your own beautiful glass flower-relief piece inspired by the textures and colours of Summer. \nBy the end of the day;\nYou will have enjoyed wandering around the beautiful flower garden and having time to observe and sketch the flowers\nYou will have learnt about fused glass and the range of techniques used\nYou will have used some design skills to create your own unique design for your statement glass piece of your choice\nYou will have created your glass piece (platter\, bowl or vase) ready for firing using your sketch ideas and your design\nYou will have used a range of accessory glass to create your piece \nYou will make for yourself:\nA beautiful plant relief piece and a set of two coasters \nIntroduction:\nWe will start with a welcome and refreshments on your arrival.\nThen into a brief introduction\, by Jazz\, to glass fusing and the days project.\nWe will then need to prepare the clay slabs that we will use to create our designs. Once the clay is rolled there will be a time to wander around the cutting garden and gather some specimens to use in your designs. \nWe will use our gathered plant material to press into the clay and create our designs. We will then mix up a plaster mix and cover the clay to create the relief design. This is a messy workshop and we will give you to wear\, an apron and a mask whilst we are mixing up the plaster. \nWe will leave our plaster to harden whilst we enjoy our lunch.\nAfter lunch you will return to your mold. You will need to remove the clay from the plaster and clean up the mold. You will then select your coloured glass for your piece and add any coloured accents. \nYour molds will be taken back to the artists workshop where they will be fully dried before firing.\nPlease note: Your pieces will be finished by Jazz and returned for collection\, or posted at cost in 3-4 weeks time. \n Tutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults.\nShe has a reputation for patience and intimate knowledge of glass as material and a variety of techniques for crafting it.\nJazz has always been creative\, studying music\, photography\, theatre studies and biology at A-level. She has designed opera sets and stage costumes. She draws on all these influences for her work\, as well as her love of nature\, gardens and landscape. Jenny was then awarded a further certificate in field biology from Sussex University. \nVenues:\nA private garden in East Chiltington.\nWe are delighted to have the opportunity to garden in a rural\, Sussex\, garden in the downland village of East Chiltington near Plumpton\, East Sussex.\nThis garden has established borders\, ponds\, orchard\, kitchen garden and wildflower meadows. We also have the opportunity to create a new border for cut flowers. \nAlfriston Gardens\, Berwick\nAlfriston Gardens opens to the public in 2023. There are established borders and also areas that are being developed\, following recent building works at this traditional wedding venue.\nWe will have the opportunity to garden shady and sunny areas\, as well as pruning established climbers and planting ornamental pots for extra colour. \nA group garden visit to a beautiful\, Sussex garden in Lindfield.\nFor a summer treat\, we will ‘down tools’ and visit a beautiful\, Sussex garden together. DESCRIPTION:Fused Glass Art for Beginners – A Summer Flower Piece\nJoin glass artist\, Jazz Dixon for a craft class with a difference.\nLearn to create your own beautiful glass flower piece inspired by the colours of Summer. \nBy the end of the day;\nYou will have enjoyed wandering around the beautiful flower garden and having time to observe and sketch the flowers\nYou will have learnt about fused glass and the range of techniques used\nYou will have used some design skills to create your own unique design for your statement glass piece of your choice\nYou will have created your glass piece (platter\, bowl or vase) ready for firing using your sketch ideas and your design\nYou will have used a range of accessory glass to create your piece\nYou will make for yourself:\nA beautiful large flower bowl\, platter or vase \nIntroduction:\nYou will spend the first part of the morning walking around the beautiful flower garden observing and drawing some of the amazing flowers. This part of the day will help develop your ideas for your own glass piece.\nWe will spend time creating some simple guided sketches\, taking time to observe the shape and colours of the flowers. \nWe will then have a brief talk and introduction to fused glass and the range of materials available before moving on to designing your own unique statement glass piece. This can be a square platter 30cm x 30cm\, or a glass bowl 30cm diameter\, or a glass vase approx. 25cm tall. Jazz will guide you through the practicalities of the design process and show you how to incorporate the ideas from your sketches. \nAfter lunch you will create your design using a wide range of coloured accessory glass with the help and guidance from the expert.\nYour finished design will be taken away and fired\, and returned for collection in approx. 3 weeks.\nPlease note that your work will be fired by Jazz after the course and can be collected in person or sent to you at cost. \n Tutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. DESCRIPTION:How to Garden ‘Greener’ – a practical autumn gardening course. \nA rare opportunity to learn practical gardening with a professional horticulturalist. \nLearn by doing and garden with professional gardener\, Jenny Samuels. Jenny will be taking a small group (max. 9) to Sussex Prairie Garden to teach you tips and techniques for improving your own garden. \nOverview:\nAutumn is a transitional time in the garden. Whilst some plants are starting to die back\, many are still in bloom\, and this presents lots of opportunities for gardeners! \nOn our two day autumn practical gardening course you will learn how to create new plants from cuttings\, how to collect and store seeds and how to choose and plant the best bulbs for your spring garden. \nYou will also expand your knowledge of plants\, discuss the best plants to keep your garden blooming through the autumn months\, as well as learning how to prepare your garden for winter. \nJenny teaches in small groups and it is informal and aims to be fun. We want you to learn a lot but also to enjoy your day\, and meet other people with a passion for gardening with whom you can exchange and share knowledge. \nWe teach using greener gardening principles to minimise our own carbon footprint and to encourage biodiversity. \nSubjects covered: \n\nHow to taking cuttings successfully. This includes semi-ripe cuttings\, hardwood cuttings and root cutting.\nCollecting and storing seeds.\nHow to choose and plant bulbs for different situations – borders\, pots and naturalising in lawns\nExtending the season – getting the best out of your garden through autumn and winter.\nPreparing your garden for winter. What we can leave in place\, what to cut back\, and what to protect.\n\nIncludes:\nComplimentary drinks throughout the day\nSoil testing of your own samples\nTake-home cuttings\, seeds and divisions\, when available \nEach day:\nFrom 9.30am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on.\nIn the morning\, Jenny will start with an introduction to the subjects of the day\, before heading out into the garden for hands-on gardening.\nOur set-up is ‘rustic’ so bring warm clothes and a sandwich\, soup-in-a-flask lunch for yourself.\nDuring the day we will have tea breaks and biscuits in the afternoon to keep your sugar levels up.\nAs hardy gardeners\, we will carry on through light rain and cold. We will sow some seeds together and prick out some ready-grown seedling\, and if you come with your own seed trays then you can take your future plants home with you. \nSpring is also a great time to split many herbaceous perennials\, and we will show you how to make numerous smaller plants from one parent plant\, which useful way to fill empty spaces in your garden.  We will look at the sort of plants which can be split\, and the techniques used to split different types of herbaceous plants. \nSubjects Covered\n\nWhich seeds should I grow?\nHow to sow small\, medium\, and large seeds into pots and trays\nBreaking seed dormancy mechanisms\nSeed compost and mulches\nPricking out and potting-on seedlings\nSeedling care and planting out\nHow and when to divide perennial plants with fibrous roots\nHow to divide big clumps of perennials with dense crowns\nHow to divide perennials with solid crowns\nAfter care of your divisions\n\nWho is the course for?\nNo prior gardening experience is necessary for this course. Dividing perennials can be hard work so you should be gardening fit\, although it’s also fine to watch and learn. SUMMARY:A Beginners Day of Natural Dyeing
DESCRIPTION:Join dye expert\, Jenny Mercer for a day discovering the world of natural dyeing using plants we find all around us. At the end of the course you will take home a scarf to add to your wardrobe\, that you have dyed yourself using one of the palette of natural colours extracted on the day. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou’ll be welcomed with refreshments before Jenny gives an introduction to the colourful world of natural dyeing\, including a brief history\, looking at source plants\, the process of extraction and dyeing. \nTogether you will use a variety of plants to extract their natural dyes\, which you will prepare together and the pots will boil away during the morning as you work. The dyes will be used on a scarf which you will prepare with mordants to bond the dye to the material\, with Jenny taking you through the process step by step. \nA delicious lunch will be provided\, all made in the venue kitchen\, and if the weather is fine\, you can step out and enjoy the cottage garden and flower borders at the beautiful secluded venue in the heart of East Sussex. \nThe afternoon will be used to complete the process of dyeing your scarf which you will be able to enjoy long beyond the course day\, or you may like to make one to give as a gift. \nSubjects Covered:\nA brief history of dyeing\nUnderstanding the importance of mordants in the dyeing process\nThe differences in plants used for dyeing\nTechnique and method used in dyeing fabric\nAn overview of the use of natural dyeing in today’s world \nBy the end of the day you will:\nHave an understanding of process of extracting natural dyes from a range of plants\nHave used different plants to create a number of different dyes\nDyed a scarf in one plant dye\, selecting the colour from the range created\nHave samples and records of your work to take away with you \nTutor:\nJenny Mercer trained as a textile designer 30 years ago in Scotland and has since worked as a dyer in opera\, ballet and theatre companies across the country. Jenny is passionate about sharing her skills and expertise with others\, particularly focusing on using natural dyes because they are so much better for the environment. SUMMARY:Practical Garden Focus Day - March: Get Your Garden Ready for the Year Ahead
DESCRIPTION:A rare opportunity to learn practical gardening through the seasons\, with our Garden Focus Days led by a professional horticulturalist.\nLearn by doing and garden through the year with professional gardener\, Jenny Samuels. Our Garden Focus Days are once a month from March to October and Jenny will be taking a small group through the gardening calendar\, teaching tips and techniques for improving your own garden\, whilst developing your gardening knowledge and skills. \nJoin us for one Garden Focus Day\, a few\, or for the whole year……\nWhether you are attending for just one\, or a series of the Focus Days\, there will be lots to learn and take away to use in your garden from each session. This course has been designed so that each Focus Day will teach you all you need to know to complete the important garden jobs in the month to come. And for those booking for the whole year\, you will find that the course has been created so that each month you will build on the knowledge and skills learnt in previous sessions. \nMarch Focus Day:\nGetting Your Garden Ready for the Year Ahead\nAs the garden begins to come alive\, there is so much to be done in early spring to prepare your garden for the year ahead. Our March Focus Day will look at jobs for the coming month including:\n– Dividing perennials\n– Preparing and improving the soil for optimal plant health and drought resistance\n– An opportunity to test your soil for those who would like to bring a sample\n– Seasonal pruning jobs\n– Other jobs for early Spring \nWhat to expect on the day:\nFrom 9.45am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on.\nUsually\, in the morning\, Jenny will start with an introduction to the subjects of the day\, before heading out into the garden for hands-on gardening.\nOur set-up is ‘rustic’ so bring warm clothes and a sandwich\, soup-in-a-flask lunch for yourself.\nAs hardy gardeners\, we will carry on through light rain and cold. We have places to shelter in each course location\, but please be aware that dreadful weather may necessitate Jenny calling a halt to outdoor activities.\nWe will finish at 3pm.\nAll our course days are designed to be enjoyable\, informative and fun\, with a mixture of input from Jenny\, and plenty of chances to put into practice what you are learning. \nThe venue:\nOur March Focus Day takes place at a large private rural Sussex garden in East Chiltington near Plumpton\, East Sussex. Her original degree was in biomedical science\, before retraining in horticulture\, and gaining an RHS diploma with Commendation. Jenny was then awarded a further certificate in field biology from Sussex University. \nWhat you will need to bring and wear:\nPlease bring a packed lunch with you.\nWe advise that you wear steel toe-capped boots\, and of course gardening clothes and rain-wear. CLICK HERE for more information. \nJoin us for a relaxing day surrounded by the beautiful flowers of Pitfield Barn Cut Flower Farm\, and learn to harvest\, prepare flowers for pressing and be inspired to create your own personalised art. \nPlan of the Day\nThe workshop starts with a demonstration by your tutor for the day\, Wendy Darby\, of the art of flower pressing\, including how to select and prepare your flowers through the seasons. \nYou will choose a variety of fresh flowers from the farm garden to press in your personal flower press. The press and flowers will be yours to take home at the end of the day. \nYou will also work with pre-pressed flowers which we have pressed for you. DESCRIPTION:“I had an amazing first day with Jenny. Came away feeling much more confident about what and when I should be maintaining my garden. I had a really enjoyable day.” Deborah (March 2024) \nA rare opportunity to learn practical gardening skills through the seasons\, with our Practical Garden Focus Days. Learn by doing and garden through the year with professional gardener\, Jenny Samuels. Our Garden Focus Days take place monthly and Jenny will teach tips and techniques for carrying all the important garden jobs in the month to come\, whilst developing your plant knowledge and gardening skills. \nApril Garden Focus Day: Preparing and Planting\nBy mid spring the soil is warming up and there is plenty to be done in the garden to prepare your beds and plants to ensure you have a continual show of colour and interest through the rest of spring and summer. Our April Focus Day day will cover the garden jobs for the coming month including: \n– Growing plants from seed\n– Preparing a bed for planting and sowing\n– Creating a healthy compost heap\n– Seasonal pruning jobs\n– Creating neat edges to borders \nWhat to expect on the day:\nFrom 9.45am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on. \nUsually\, in the morning\, Jenny will start with an introduction to the subjects of the day\, before heading out into the garden for hands-on gardening. \nOur set-up is ‘rustic’ so bring warm clothes and a sandwich\, soup-in-a-flask lunch for yourself. \nAs hardy gardeners\, we will carry on through light rain and cold. We have places to shelter in each course location\, but please be aware that dreadful weather may necessitate Jenny calling a halt to outdoor activities. \nThe day will finish at 3pm before we clear up and leave by 3.30pm. \nAll our course days are designed to be enjoyable\, informative and fun\, with a mixture of input from Jenny\, and plenty of chances to put into practice what you are learning. \nThe Venue:\nOur April Focus Day takes place at a large private rural Sussex garden in East Chiltington near Plumpton\, East Sussex. She loves the challenge of rejuvenating tired borders – making good what is there and introducing fresh planting combinations to breathe new life into a garden. \nAs the owner of the Lindfield Gardening Company\, Jenny has a wide range of experience including horticultural gardening\, planting design and teaching gardening to enthusiastic beginners. Her original degree was in biomedical science\, before retraining in horticulture\, and gaining an RHS diploma with Commendation. Jenny was then awarded a further certificate in field biology from Sussex University. \nWhat you will need to bring and wear:\nPlease bring a packed lunch with you.\nWe advise that you wear steel toe-capped boots\, and of course gardening clothes and rain-wear.
