DESCRIPTION:“A fabulous course for a complete beginner like me to get hands-on experience of hand\, natural dyeing” Jessica \n\nJoin dye expert Jenny Mercer for a day discovering the world of natural dyeing using autumn & winter plants we find all around us\, including barks and foraged materials. This hands-on workshop takes you through the full process—from exploring seasonal dye plants and seeds\, to extraction and dyeing – as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \nAlthough we will discuss dyeing a range of fabrics\, we will especially concentrate on the material of cotton\, and other cellulose fibres. At the end of the course you will take home a pair of cotton socks that you have dyed yourself using a range of beautiful\, natural colours extracted during the workshop. Plus you’ll leave equipped with the skills\, knowledge\, and inspiration to carry on your dyeing journey—and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nEnjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. She’ll share a brief history and walk you through the dyeing process—from plant selection to extraction techniques. \nYou’ll explore a variety of dye plants and work together to extract their natural colours. As the dye pots simmer\, you’ll prepare the cotton using mordants\, essential for bonding dye to fabric. SUMMARY:Colourful Planting Design - Understanding a Gardener's Palette
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our talented designer Rachel Owens 2026 garden workshop series. These workshops will teach you everything you need to know about creating the garden you have always dreamed of. \nThis course explores the way colour is used in the garden and how we can create our own unique planting pallets by understanding the relationships between different combinations. \nThe morning will start with creating a personal colour wheel from paint samples and playing with the relationship between certain colour combinations. We will work through colour selections to include analogous\, harmonious\, complementary\, split-complementary\, triadic schemes. \nAfter lunch we will look at the way these relationships can work outdoors and how these combinations can be used to select plants for a scheme. We will look at examples by working garden designers and see how their ideas have adopted these schemes. She has recently completed an MSc in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry and manages the health of urban trees within Sussex daily. Rachel is also part of a Community Interest Company creating a large-scale land-based Centre for Resilience in East Sussex. What can we do to extend the life of our tools and how can we keep our blades sharp? \nIn this gardening workshop\, we will look at what are the essential tools every gardener should have to hand and introduce some lesser-known tools that can make garden tasks easier to perform and less likely to cause joint strain. SUMMARY:Lino Printing - Christmas Creations Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a creative day exploring the art of linocut and lino printing\, and to learn how to design and carve your own winter inspired linocuts. Whether you’re completely new to the techniques\, or have some experience\, come and join us for a relaxing day in which you will create your own print designs to use in your Christmas craft projects. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou’ll be welcomed with refreshments before course tutor Wendy Darby\, begins with an introduction to linocut\, demonstrating how to use the carving tools and basic cutting techniques. Once you have used materials provided\, or those you might like to bring with you\, to use as inspiration for your winter themed designs\, you will make your own small practice block to learn the techniques. You will be shown how to ink your lino block and burnish prints by hand. \nAfter a break for lunch which you can either bring with you or buy from the Old Barn Café onsite\, you will return to your creations. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of a series with expert garden designer Rachel Owen. These workshops will teach you everything you need to know about creating the garden you have always dreamed of. \nThe morning will start by looking at what planting design is\, and why it can all feel overwhelming. SUMMARY:Sketching Spring Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day learning to sketch and watercolour inspired by seasonal blooms. \nTake some time out to enjoy nature through sketching. Using pencils and fine-liner pens we will create expressive sketches of plants and flowers and learn techniques that you can use to engage with nature wherever you are. The course is more about the simple enjoyment of observing than having to produce a masterpiece and there is no pressure to perform. In the afternoon we will really bring the sketches to life\, adding watercolour. \nWeather permitting\, we will take advantage of the many lovely plants at Oak Barn and sketch outside. All materials will be provided except a sketchbook. Please bring a hardback sketchbook\, it should have a minimum paperweight of 160gsm for watercolours. \n\nOverview:\nMorning – pencil and fine liner drawing\nAfternoon – adding watercolour  \nSubjects covered:\n\nLooking at flower shapes and forms\nLooking at capturing the character of plants\nUsing expressive lines to make sketches full of life\nAdding bright\, colourful watercolour washes to the drawings to really bring them to life (full day only\, optional)\n\nWho is the course for?\nAnyone welcome\, beginners included! We will hopefully be sketching outside for part of the day so consider bringing a sun hat. We will look at possible plant combinations that share similar water needs and how the combination of plants can reduce water loss. The wrong tool can make a job hard to do and at worst cause injury to you and your plants! Which tools are worth investing in and which tool are likely to remain unused. What can we do to extend the life of our tools and how can we keep our blades sharp? \nIn this gardening workshop\, we will look at what are the essential tools every gardener should have to hand and introduce some lesser-known tools that can make garden tasks easier to perform and less likely to cause joint strain.
