SUMMARY:Practical Workshop: Pruning Roses
DESCRIPTION:Pruning roses is a subject that many gardeners feel very unsure about – there are several different types of rose groups and each group has its own pruning regime so it’s easy to tie yourself in knots with it all. On this 1-day rose pruning workshop you will be shown by professional gardener Jenny Samuels\, the principles of rose pruning; why we prune\, how much we take off\, and what to do when we are unsure of what sort of roses we have. We will break down what seems like a complicated subject into something easy to understand and you will end the day feeling confident in your new skills. \nWorkshop Overview:\nThe workshop will begin by looking at the reasons why gardeners worry about pruning roses and why books and on-line guides can feel confusing and nuanced. We will then explore the principles of rose pruning; why we prune\, how the plant responds to pruning and why winter is a good time to prune most roses. You will prune a variety of roses including shrub roses and climbing roses. Finally\, we will discuss on-going rose care so you get the best out of your roses for the coming summer. In the middle of the day we will break for lunch\, please bring a packed lunch with you. \n\nSubjects Covered:\n• The principles of pruning – why we prune roses and how the plant responds.\n• Which roses we prune in winter\n• Correct pruning cuts\n• How to prune different border roses\n• How to prune a climbing rose\n• How to prune a rose when we don’t know what type it is\n• Equipment to use\n• On-going rose care; feeding\, watering\, deadheading and avoiding disease \nWho is the course for?\nNo experience or prior knowledge is necessary for this course.\nYou should be able to spend a morning outside on your feet\, though you are welcome to bring a folding chair with you to sit on if this is helpful. \nBy the end of the workshop you will:\n• Understand why we prune roses.\n• Feel confident to prune a shrub or climbing rose\n• Be able to prune a rose when you are unsure of its type.\n• Know how to make correct pruning cuts using secateurs\, loppers\, or a pruning saw.\n• Know how to feed\, water\, and maintain your roses for the following year.\n• Know how to reduce the risk of common rose diseases. \nAbout the Tutor:\nJenny Samuels\, owner of the Lindfield Gardening Company\, has a wide range of experience including horticultural gardening\, planting design and teaching gardening to enthusiastic beginners. I have been raving about it to my family and friends.” Agnieszka \n\nIn mid spring the soil is warming up and there is plenty to be done in the garden to prepare your beds and plants to ensure you have a continual show of colour and interest through the rest of the spring and summer to come. \nOn our ‘Preparing Flowerbeds’ 1-day practical workshop\, professional gardener Jenny Samuels will teach you tips and techniques for ensuring your borders have the best chance of being an abundance of colour and health through the coming months\, whilst also developing your plant knowledge and gardening skills. \nYou will learn by doing\, getting to practice the techniques as they are taught. \nWorkshop Overview:\n\nHow to sow annual seeds for summer colour\nHow to plant correctly\nHow to manage different soil types\nChoosing the best mulch for your beds\nHow to make light work of weeding\nHow to divide perennials and double your plants\n\nWhat to expect on the day:\nFrom 9.45am we will have the kettle on for a welcoming cuppa and biscuit\, which will give time for everyone to arrive and get their gardening gear on. Jenny will start with an introduction to the subjects of the day\, before heading out into the beautiful private Sussex garden for hands-on gardening. \nAll our course days are designed to be enjoyable\, informative and fun\, with a mixture of input from Jenny\, and plenty of chances to put into practice what you are learning. We keep the group small so that everyone has the chance to ask questions\, and opportunity to put into practice what you are learning because we believe the best way to learn is by doing. Full teaching notes will be provided to you as a record of the course content. \nOur set-up is ‘rustic’ so bring warm clothes and a sandwich\, soup-in-a-flask lunch\, for yourself. As hardy gardeners\, we will carry on through light rain and cold. We have places to shelter\, but please be aware that dreadful weather may necessitate Jenny calling a halt to outdoor activities. \nWe will finish at 3pm before we clear up and leave by 3.30pm. \n\nThe Group:\nJenny teaches in small groups which ensures everyone gets the opportunity to practice\, and time to ask questions.
