SUMMARY:Fused Glass Poppies and Garden Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Join expert glass artist\, Jazz Dixon for a craft class with a difference. Learn to create your own beautiful glass poppies\, suitable for indoor or outdoor display. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Jazz gives a short introduction to glass fusing and the wide range of techniques used. You will be introduced to the projects and have time to think about your own creative ideas. You will have a choice of colours\, from traditional red\, or a small selection of other colours. You will be introduced to glass cutting\, and with expert guidance\, you will cut and shape your glass to create the petals for your flowers. \nFollowing a break for lunch (please bring a packed lunch with you)\, you will construct your two poppies\, with the opportunity to use accessory glass to add details to your flowers. Once you have finished your 2 flowers\, you will have the opportunity to use the off cuts of glass to create smaller floral hanger. All the tools and safety equipment will be supplied alongside expert tuition. \nYour pieces will be taken away and fired. They will be available for collection from West Sussex or East Sussex\, or can be posted to you (at your own risk) once completed. DESCRIPTION:“A fabulous course for a complete beginner like me to get hands-on experience of hand\, natural dyeing” Jessica \n\nJoin dye expert Jenny Mercer for a day discovering the world of natural dyeing using autumn & winter plants we find all around us\, including barks and foraged materials. This hands-on workshop takes you through the full process—from exploring seasonal dye plants and seeds\, to extraction and dyeing – as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. \nAlthough we will discuss dyeing a range of fabrics\, we will especially concentrate on the material of cotton\, and other cellulose fibres. At the end of the course you will take home a pair of cotton socks that you have dyed yourself using a range of beautiful\, natural colours extracted during the workshop. Plus you’ll leave equipped with the skills\, knowledge\, and inspiration to carry on your dyeing journey—and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. \nPlan of the Day:\nEnjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. She’ll share a brief history and walk you through the dyeing process—from plant selection to extraction techniques. \nYou’ll explore a variety of dye plants and work together to extract their natural colours. As the dye pots simmer\, you’ll prepare the cotton using mordants\, essential for bonding dye to fabric. SUMMARY:Colourful Planting Design - Understanding a Gardener's Palette
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our talented designer Rachel Owens 2026 garden workshop series. These workshops will teach you everything you need to know about creating the garden you have always dreamed of. \nThis course explores the way colour is used in the garden and how we can create our own unique planting pallets by understanding the relationships between different combinations. \nThe morning will start with creating a personal colour wheel from paint samples and playing with the relationship between certain colour combinations. We will work through colour selections to include analogous\, harmonious\, complementary\, split-complementary\, triadic schemes. \nAfter lunch we will look at the way these relationships can work outdoors and how these combinations can be used to select plants for a scheme. We will look at examples by working garden designers and see how their ideas have adopted these schemes. There will be lots of materials available and you will be encouraged to play and create your own unique designs. \nAfter our introduction you will chose the projects you wish to work on. You can choose from a Christmas tree or an s curved Christmas panel\, or a tealight holder/bowl. You will learn how to cut and break glass safely to create your design\, using a range of colours\, with the help and guidance from the expert. \nYour second project of the day will be to create up to 3 small tree decorations. You will have a choice of materials and a range of designs to inspire you as you create your own personal pieces. \nJazz will then take your designs for firing\, and your finished decorations will be posted to you within approximately three weeks—in time to enjoy in the build up to Christmas! \nTutor:\nJazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton\, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children and now she teaches glass techniques to adults. SUMMARY:Lino Printing - Christmas Creations Inspired by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a creative day exploring the art of linocut and lino printing\, and to learn how to design and carve your own winter inspired linocuts. Whether you’re completely new to the techniques\, or have some experience\, come and join us for a relaxing day in which you will create your own print designs to use in your Christmas craft projects. \nPlan of the Day:\nYou’ll be welcomed with refreshments before course tutor Wendy Darby\, begins with an introduction to linocut\, demonstrating how to use the carving tools and basic cutting techniques. Once you have used materials provided\, or those you might like to bring with you\, to use as inspiration for your winter themed designs\, you will make your own small practice block to learn the techniques. You will be shown how to ink your lino block and burnish prints by hand. \nAfter a break for lunch which you can either bring with you or buy from the Old Barn Café onsite\, you will return to your creations. DESCRIPTION:Pruning roses is a subject that many gardeners feel very unsure about – there are several different types of rose groups and each group has its own pruning regime so it’s easy to tie yourself in knots with it all. On this 1-day rose pruning workshop you will be shown by professional gardener Jenny Samuels\, the principles of rose pruning; why we prune\, how much we take off\, and what to do when we are unsure of what sort of roses we have. We will break down what seems like a complicated subject into something easy to understand and you will end the day feeling confident in your new skills. \nWorkshop Overview:\nThe workshop will begin by looking at the reasons why gardeners worry about pruning roses and why books and on-line guides can feel confusing and nuanced. We will then explore the principles of rose pruning; why we prune\, how the plant responds to pruning and why winter is a good time to prune most roses. You will prune a variety of roses including shrub roses and climbing roses. Finally\, we will discuss on-going rose care so you get the best out of your roses for the coming summer. I had a really enjoyable day.” Deborah \nPruning is a subject that many gardeners worry about getting right; there are so many different types of shrubs\, so many ways to prune\, and online advice can be confusing and contradictory. \nOur one-day Introduction to Pruning workshop\, led by professional gardener Jenny Samuels\, will take you through the basic principles of pruning and how to apply them to any deciduous shrub. By the end of the day\, you will have greatly increased your skills\, knowledge and confidence in pruning. \nWorkshop Overview:\nThis is a practical day\, where you will be able to practice pruning a variety of shrubs yourself. \nWe will start the day looking at the reasons that gardeners worry about pruning and why books and on-line guides can feel confusing and nuanced. SUMMARY:Sketching Spring Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day learning to sketch and watercolour inspired by seasonal blooms. \nTake some time out to enjoy nature through sketching. Using pencils and fine-liner pens we will create expressive sketches of plants and flowers and learn techniques that you can use to engage with nature wherever you are. The course is more about the simple enjoyment of observing than having to produce a masterpiece and there is no pressure to perform. In the afternoon we will really bring the sketches to life\, adding watercolour. \nWeather permitting\, we will take advantage of the many lovely plants at Oak Barn and sketch outside. All materials will be provided except a sketchbook. DESCRIPTION:Spend a creative day with expert weaver and colour enthusiast Theresa Sundt\, as you learn the art of weaving in this inspiring one-day workshop creating a beautiful summer scene wall hanging. \n\nThis relaxing and hands-on course introduces essential weaving techniques\, helping you develop new skills while enjoying a truly creative experience. Also\, Theresa was such a joyous person\, I loved her!!” Louisa \nPlan of the Day:\nYou will be welcomed with refreshments before Theresa starts the course with a brief talk and introduction to weaving and the range of materials available to use during the day. Theresa will explore with you different ideas for your piece and various weaving techniques for you to use in creating your unique design. A whole range of material will be available for you to use and experiment with throughout the day. \nTheresa\, will demonstrate the basic weaving techniques and how to enhance your design with woven embroidery\, and she will support you as you use a loom frame to create your design. By the end of the day your finished woven piece will be ready to take home and hang on your wall. \n\nTutor:\nTheresa has a BA in Creative Arts and History of Art from the University of Haifa and the Mc Gill University in Montreal. She has a depth of the value of colour as a certified colour therapist\, and also teaches the art of weaving and of colour in schools\, retreats and international workshops.
