Planning and Planting Your Own Garden – Day 1

Getting the layout of your garden right is the key to enjoying it for years to come.
Make sure that you have enough space for sitting, playing, relaxing and also make sure that your plants are in the right place, so they can thrive and perform to their best.

Who is the course for?
Beginners and garden enthusiasts are welcome.
This course for anyone who wants to re-design their own garden space; choose hard landscaping materials and then develop a basic planting scheme.

Subjects covered in Day 1 – 23rd June:
1. Garden styles
2. The Design Process
3. Surveying and analysing your site
4. Your garden brief
5. Putting everything in the right place (a functional layout plan)
6. The master-plan
7. Hard landscaping materials
8. Getting your garden built

By the end of the day you will:
• Understand how to survey and analyse your garden site
• Have completed a basic design layout exercise, which you can then apply to your own garden
• Considered suitable hard landscaping materials for your garden

In Part 2, Juliet will explain how to design the planting for your garden to achieve colour, interest and atmosphere.
You will learn how to choose and combine plants for your soil conditions & the best effect in your garden.
You can decide on the style of planting that suits your garden and the types of plants that you want to grow.
We will discuss the pro’s and con’s of different plants, what to look for when you are buying plants and how to source good plants locally.

With illustrated talks & drawing exercises, by the end of the day, you will have completed some planting schemes and have the skills to continue designing at home.

1. The planting design process
2. Requirements for healthy plants
3. Analysing your soil and site
4. Planting styles
5. How to combine plants
6. Drawing a planting plan

By the end of the day you will:
• Have tested your own soil
• Analysed the growing conditions in your garden
• Be able to choose the correct plants for your site
• Started a planting scheme to achieve your chosen style

The Group
We will be an informal group. Juliet teaches in an accessible, workshop style with illustrated ‘info-bites’ and relevant exercises for you to think about your own garden.
As well as being an award-winning garden designer, Juliet has been teaching gardening to professionals and enthusiasts for over 15 years.
